J.P. Edwards, 2010 Michigan Duck Stamp Winner

Though a newcomer to the wildlife art industry, J.P. Edwards has been exposed to wildlife for as long as he can remember. J.P. recalls lying on the living room floor watching Marty Stouffer’s Wild America and sketching his favorite animals. It was then that his parents recognized his gift as an artist. Growing up in Smithfield, North Carolina, J.P. was fascinated with the natural world around him, spending hours in the woods climbing trees, exploring rivers and observing the animals he encountered. J.P.’s favorite pastime was going fishing and hunting with his father. These experiences taught him to respect the outdoors and cherish the earth’s natural landscapes.

While furthering his education at Appalachian State University in Boone, North Carolina, J.P. was exposed to the Blue Ridge Parkway. Its streams, mountains and wildlife greatly contributed to making college life a memorable experience. At Appalachian, J.P. studied graphic design, a discipline that has brought balance, form and attention to detail to his paintings. J.P. also took studio classes including illustration and photography that would help lay a solid foundation for his work in wildlife art.

J.P.’s professional artistic career began when he ventured to New York City after graduating from Appalachian. Living in the Big Apple, J.P. worked as a graphic designer/illustrator learning to handle tight deadlines and long hours. Amid the hustle and bustle of city life, he spent much of his free time in Central Park to satisfy his longing for wide-open spaces. Through its welcome expanses of trees and grass, as well as the zoo and the American Museum of Natural History, the park served as his sanctuary for nature. Restless for new experiences, J.P. later moved to Austin, Texas. Life in the Lone Star state gave him the opportunity to explore a vast variety of unfamiliar landscapes and wildlife.

But as the old saying goes, "there’s no place like home". J.P. eventually returned to North Carolina and currently lives in Raleigh with his wife Mary, who is his most avid fan. Whether going on trips or exploring local parks, he is always thinking of a concept for a blank canvas that needs some paint. J.P. believes his talent and passion for art will help him make a difference in this world. So far to his credit as a wildlife artist, J.P. has won the Nevada and Michigan Duck Stamp Competitions along with being names Idaho's Ducks Unlimited Sponsor Print of the Year. Lorna Poulos, 2009 Michigan Duck Stamp Winner

Lorna Poulos:

One of eight children, Poulos was born and raised in Midland, Michigan. Lorna raised her sons, Tyson and Gabe, in nearby Sanford where, for several years, the family lived on Sanford Lake with its year-around wealth of wildlife. The family built very creative blinds, for land and water, from which she could ‘capture’ her subjects.
A self-taught artist, Poulos uses her own photography as the basis for her wildlife and landscapes. Her photography takes her from her own backyard to other states, often while visiting her siblings and their children. One of her favorite new places to photograph is Montana, where her eldest son Ty is a fly fishing instructor and guide. Her youngest son Gabe takes her touring by boat on Michigan’s many lakes and rivers. Poulos and her husband, Glenn visit many spots in Michigan during the wildlife migration seasons, and they both spend hours photographing all that Michigan has to offer............which is quite amazing!
Poulos also works full time at her business, Lasting Lines, applying permanent facial make-up. She also works with cancer survivors, creating the final touches to mastectomy reconstructions for women and men, work referred to her by local surgeons. Poulos calls it another aspect of her art.
Besides painting, Poulos also sculpts, using papier mache clay to create interesting characters, often working on them in the early hours of the morning and weekends.
With her love of art and the support of her family and friends, Poulos aspires to pursue her art full time in the future.

Rod Lawrence 2007 Michigan Duck Stamp Winner

Rod Lawrence graduated with a fine arts degree, magna cum laude, from the University of Michigan in 1973. Since then he has been working full time as a professional artist. His credits include being named the Michigan Ducks Unlimited Artist of the Year in 1979 and the Michigan United Conservation Club's Michigan Wildlife Artist of the Year in 1981. He also has the winning designs for the 1983 and 1990 Michigan Duck Stamps, and the 1981, 1987, and 1992 Michigan Trout Stamps. He had an unprecedented double win for both the 1995 Michigan Duck Stamp and 1995 Michigan Trout Stamp. His win for the 2000, 2002 & 2007 Michigan Duck Stamp makes him the only artists to have won ten Michigan stamp designs. He is the only artist to win six Michigan Duck Stamps and one of only two artists to win four Michigan Trout Stamps.

Lawrence has exhibited in many group and one-man shows, including the prestigious Leigh Yawkey Woodson Art Museum's "Birds in Art" and "Wildlife: The artist's View" shows. From these shows, his work has been chosen several times for their national tour. His art has also appeared as covers, illustrations and features in many outdoor magazines. Three sets of limited edition collector plates also feature his work. He is also an active instructor for artists' workshops. An instructional book "Painting Wildlife Textures" written and illustrated by Lawrence was published and released by North Light Books in March of 1997. It is now into its third printing. A second instructional book, called "Painting Basics - Waterfowl & Wading Birds" was released in December of 2000. He is the co-author of another instructional book for Walter Foster Publishing, which was released in the fall of 2004.

A log cabin in the hardwoods of northern Michigan, overlooking the North branch of the Manistee River, is home for Lawrence and his family. The symbol preceding his signature in each of his painting shows the importance of his family in his work. The oddly shaped "S" is for his wife Susan (an accomplished basket weaver and instructor), and the "M" and "B" represent their sons, Matthew and Brett.

Peter K. Mathios 2006 Michigan Duck Stamp Winner

Behind each of Peter's paintings is inspiration that comes from past experiences. There has to be that breathtaking moment when everything comes together in a harmony that strikes the core of his soul in order for him to paint something. Moments like these usually stem from childhood memories and for Peter they originated from hunting ducks with his father and brother in the Suisun Marsh of Northern California. During this time, he really became interested in the different species of waterfowl and drew them religiously. During his free time, Peter even drew the wildlife photos that appeared in hunting magazines as well as fantastic hunting scenes he longed to experience.

Upon graduating from the University of California at Davis with a degree in art, Peter moved to Bend, Oregon to hunt, fish, ski, and, above all, paint. It was there that he met and married his wife, Rachelle. Together, they hiked the many trails around Central Oregon gathering reference and studying the abundant wildlife. They now reside in the rich, diverse Willamette Valley where Rachelle is a stay-at-home mom to their two children, Olivia and Simon. Peter is teaching art at Central Linn High School and painting the lush nature around them.

Peter has just been selected, for the fourth time, as the Oregon Ducks Unlimited Artist of the Year for 2005. He has twice been juried into the prestigious Birds in Art exhibition and has appeared in Wildlife Art and US Art magazines as well as appearing twice on the cover of California Waterfowl. Internationally, he designed the 2002 New Zealand Fish and Game Habitat Stamp. His website is mathiosstudios.net
