Blue Water Chapter Members Banding Geese

These are photos of a Canada Goose Banding/Roundup of resident birds on Belle Isle, Detroit Michigan. Through studies preformed by Michigan State University and the Michigan Dept. of Natural Resources, these city dwellers were determined not migratory. For this reason, after capture, sexing and being banded they will be relocated to Iowa. Hopefully these birds will someday come before the gun of hunters elsewhere.

Another of the Many Projects that the Blue Water Chapter takes on.

In 2005 175 Wood Duck Boxes were create and in 2006 another 100.

Habitat projects and wood duck box's are just some of the many year round activities that our organization conducts for the enhancement of waterfowl. Each Chapters members coordinate the building and erecting of these boxes throughout our state on an annual basis. Many will be used in state managed game areas, as well as many being donated to private property owners.

The Wood Duck is considered by many to be North Americas most colorful gamebird. During the early 1900's this bird was near extinction due to unregulated hunting and an over-aggressive logging industry. Today due to the many efforts of sportsman and groups like ours, the Wood Duck is one of the great wildlife conservation stories of our time.

So what else isMDHA doing?
We do a lot of behind the scenes things through MDHA...for example, recently we have pitched in on helping fund some pump restoration at Nayanquing Pt. and we footed the entire bill to send the DNR staffer to the summer flyway meetings which the DNR said they could not afford to do otherwise. Macatawa Bay Chapter sent a check for $5,600 to pay for seed and herbcides for the continued operation of the Todd Farm for 2006.These are just a few examples of how Michigan money is staying and being used locally in Michigan. All MDHA money stays in Michigan. That is what's so great about it.
